#TalkTuesday with Memkoh: Replication vs. Inspiration

There is a thin line between Replication & Inspiration, one that way too many people cross. Let’s talk about it. What’s the difference between these two forms of artistic expression? And at what point can we sufficiently say someone has crossed that borderline i.e. At what point do we scream “bullshit” and issue someone a red card for knowingly replicating someone’s work without attribution?. Inspiration: I recently saw a magazine feature of one of the designers I’ve exposed here for replicating another designer’s work, “word for word”. In that article, she was praised for being a “top designer” of a best selling piece that wasn’t her original idea. Lifting elements of one’s design is one thing; lifting an entire design without credit is another. How do we condone these things?

Let’s talk!

Replication is a form of artistic expression? HmmmI feel like replication is such a nice word you’re using 😂😂, that’s legit copying – even copying is a nice word; it’s stealing (Maybe I’m taking it too far). Especially when you don’t give credit to whoever due.
You can be inspired by someone but please let it stop at inspiration.

How we can condone? It shouldn’t be condoned. Condoning equals a nod or a thumbs up I think. It’s saying go ahead it’s okay to do it and it’s not okay.
Any and everyone should speak up for this. People work tirelessly to do things and make ideas become reality and you just copy? Lol where’s your creativity if you want to be called an artist? Work for what you want, be inspired but please explore your creativity too.

Girrlllll! I read this yesterday. Needed time to digest everything you said because you made so much sense! Love how you said replication is too kind. Shows that you fully understand this because not too many people do. Senseless Copying as a replacement word, maybe? Because as you pointed out, we’re speaking on behalf of the people who birthed an idea and toiled to make it happen, only for someone to catch it at the other end and give no credits? Oh and I meant I’m appalled by how we seem to be ok with the photocopying. Hardly anyone speaks up. Amennn to “explore your creativity” too! Exactly the point God blessed each and every one of us with that unique spice. My greatest pain usually goes thus: “ok, you’ve seen this thing and you liked it. But you know you don’t have to make the replica, right? You can add or subtract an element or two and you’ll have YOUR work that was rightfully INSPIRED by someone else’s”. That’s inspiration!
